Abstract: One of the factors that influences listeners’ performance in localization experiments is room reverberation. When a listener is in the center of the room, the effect of reverberation varies only modestly with source location. However, its effect on localization cues can become very complex if the listener is positioned close to a wall. In the present study, manikin-head Head-Related Transfer Functions (HRTF) were measured for nearby sources in a reverberant room and the effects of the reverberation on monaural and binaural localization cues were quantified. Reverberation was found to decrease interaural level difference, cause comb-filtering spectral distortions, and add frequency-to-frequency variations in all of the acoustic cues (compared to anechoic HRTFs). Results show that the acoustic effects of reverberation vary dramatically with listener position and suggest that listener position will have a strong effect on localization performance in a room.
