Flexible Dialogue Control for Intuitive Spatial Communication

 

The aim of our project is to develop natural and effective dialogue/interaction between agents (dialogue systems, artificial agents and human users) while considering all levels of linguistic, contextual and conceptual description in spatial settings. Our application requirements are derived from other SFB/TR 8 projects and range from wayfinding to route giving, and from describing spatial settings to performing collaborative actions.

Interaction within spatially embedded tasks is notoriously complex due to the broad variety of issues needing to be tackled, such as linguistic meaning, spatial and situational context, user specific characteristics, and dialogue history. Therefore, our project addresses several directions of research in parallel:

  • We promote the state of the art in empirical research in both human-human and human-system interaction, combining discourse-analytic and psycholinguistic methods,
  • and we improve the interactional flexibility of dialogue systems in situated spatial contexts by iterative research cycles of empirical work, computational implementation and systematic evaluation.

 

We investigate and develop general dialogue system components that are offered as a framework for implementing applications that support interaction in diverse spatially embedded tasks.

The functionality of our components is continuously improved and extended to reflect a broader range of activities concerning various application scenarios, such as dialogic wayfinding, scene description and recognition, spatial object localization, route giving and robot navigation, elderly and ambient assistive living centered interaction, spatial multi-agent interaction.
