Putting the Situation Back into Situated Spatial Language

It is obvious that situated spatial language is fundamentally about describing the spatial relationships between the objects mentioned. Given this, it is not surprising that most work on situated spatial language has focused on representations and models of these spatial relationships. What is less obvious, however, is the impact that the broader situational context has on the semantics of these spatial relationships. As a simple example of this broader situational context consider the location of other objects in the context. Unfortunately, a lot of the previous research has neglected this aspect of situated spatial language. This talk argues that a greater emphasis should be given to the broader situation when modeling situated spatial relationships and presents some models that have attempted to accommodate it.
