Spatial Foundations of Map Use: Insights and Puzzles from Developmental Psychology

Dr. Lynn Liben, Pennsylvania State University

Developmental theory and research reveal age-linked progressions in spatial concepts and skills. Despite normative changes, both formal research and informal anecdotes suggest that many individuals, even adults, struggle with maps in educational, occupational, and daily life contexts. This presentation will address foundational spatial concepts on which map understanding builds, and will describe empirical work on map use in the context of navigation and science education.
