Computing in the Cultural Sciences

Prof. Dr. Christoph Schlieder, Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg

The talk identifies a common theme of cultural information processing which is the transmission of knowledge over periods of time that extend beyond the span of an individual life. A central issue is that of digital long-term preservation. The first part or the talk addresses the problem of designing assistive technologies supporting documentation tasks in building archeology. An approach based on ontological modeling is presented that ensures that the digital records remain accessible for future scientific workflows. Cultural memory cannot be separated from cultural attention mechanisms. The second part of the talk shows how to model such attention mechanisms using methods from social network analysis. Implications for the conceptualization of geographic places are discussed. Finally, the mechanisms of cultural memory and cultural attention are contrasted with the cognitive mechanisms that stand at the origin of the metaphor.
